Donald Trump recognized Golan Heights as Israeli Terrain

By Admin | 25th Mar 2019

Donald  Trump tweeted that the Plateau is very important for strategic and security for Israel and region's strategic importance. In 1981, Israel had applied its administration and legislation within the Golan hills whereas claiming its claim on this area, however countries around the world did not recognize it.

Syria is constantly trying to get back the terrain.

Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, thanked President Trump for recognizing the Israeli terrain on the Golan hills.

Netanyahu tweeted, "At a time when Iran is using Syria as a platform to ruin Israel, President Trump has recognized Israeli sovereignty over Golan Heights." Thanks to President Trump. "

On the other hand, in Israel-occupied Golan, a member of the Druze community, Ayman Abu Jabal said, 'neither the United States nor Israel, nor Trump nor Netanyahu, can not change the history of any Golan Heights. This is Syria's land and it will remain the same.

What is Golan Heights

Golan Heights is a mountainous region located in southern-western Syria. This area is very important in political and strategic terms. Israel had captured Golan Heights in 1967 after a six-day war with Syria. Most Syrian Arab people living in the area left their homes after that time.

Syria tried to regain the Golan Heights during the Middle East War in 1973, but despite a huge loss to Israel in the war, Syria failed to do so. In 1974, the two countries imposed a ceasefire in the area. UN army is deployed on the ceasefire line since 1974.

In 1981, Israel announced a unilateral announcement of joining Golan Heights in its territory. But this move of Israel was not recognized internationally. There are more than 30 settlements of Jews on Golan Heights, in which about 20,000 people live. There are also 20,000 Syrian people in the area.

Strategic Importance

The southern Syria and Syria's capital Damascus are clearly visible from the top of Golan Heights. Both of these areas are about 60 km away from here.

When Golan Heights was occupied by Israel from 1948 to 1967, Syria also raised its military stir in northern Israel. Golan Heights gives Israel the advantage that they can keep an eye on Syria's activities here. This mountainous area also works as a shield for the safety of Israel from Syria. Golan Heights is also important for Israel for several other reasons. Golan is the main source of water in this dry area.

Rainfall of rain in Golan is found in the Jordan River. It fulfills the need for a third of Israel's water. Golan's land is fertile, where grapes and greens are planted. Golan is also the only ski resort in Israel.

Interrupted Peace Talks

At the end of 2003, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had said that he wants to resume peace talks with Israel. When the US canceled the peace talks in 1999-2000, then Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Barak offered to return most of the Golan to Syria. But at that time the Syrian demand was that Israel returned the entire area. This gives Syria control of the eastern end of 'Sea of Galilee'. But this part is very important for Israel because it offers drinking water right here.

This is the reason that these talks were canceled and there was no discussion about peace talks in the future. Israel wants to maintain control of the Sea of Galilee. He is also afraid that this border is only a few hundred meters away from this eastern end. If Israel deals with Syria, then he must also remove the Jewish people living in Golana Heights.

The worsening deterioration in 2008 Indirect talks between Israel and Iran resumed again. The Turkish government played an important role in starting this dialogue. But when the then prime minister of Israel Ehud Olmert had to resign due to corruption allegations, the talks were also canceled.

When Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu became the government in February 2009, Israel made it clear that he would keep his attitude to Golan strictly. In June 2009, the Syrian leader said that no talks were made on behalf of Israel.

Syrian Civil War

When the then US President Barack Obama took over in 2009, he had said that starting a dialogue between Israel and Syria would be the key goal of his foreign policy. But after the civil war that began in 2011, the situation of dialogue has not been established. In 2013, when Syrian rebels fired in Golan from the ceasefire line, Israel also responded.
